Total Time: 1 hour
-
Print Out the Slice of Pie Printable
Above this step by step guide, you’ll find the free printable I created this year. Print as many as you need on thick cardstock.
-
Cut the Slice of Pie
If your child has mastered their scissor skills, let them cut the slice of pie from the cardstock themselves. Otherwise, cut the slice of pie out of the cardstock for them.
-
Prep the Area & Supplies
Lay down a tablecloth or newspaper for easy cleanup and if you have one, put an art smock or old t-shirt on your child to prevent messes on clothing. Montessori arts and crafts can get messy when done correctly.
Take a paper plate and add the paint colors Brown, Red, and Orange. Set a paintbrush next to the plate.
To the side, close to you (the adult), cut some small strips of brown construction paper and a handful of cotton balls and place them in a pile on another paper plate. Place the white school glue and the glitter, and set it next to you. These items will be introduced to the child when the painting is done.
-
Allow the Child to Paint the Slice of Pie
Have the child sit at their spot with the slice of pie, the paper plate with the paint, and the paintbrush. Let them paint it however they’d like. I also encourage you to paint one of your own. Try not to intervene and tell them what colors to use where. If they want to mix the paint, that is just fine! If you are painting too, decide to paint a slice of pumpkin pie, or cherry pie, using the correct colors, and show them what it looks like.
-
Introduce the Remaining Supplies
When they have finished painting, take the paint and paintbrush away and replace it with the remaining supplies. Let them know the brown construction paper is the crust of the pie, the cotton balls are whipped cream, and the glitter sprinkles. Watch as they glue the items to their slice of pie in whichever way they’d like. Continue working on your slice of pie, placing the items logically where they would normally go.
-
Let Dry Completely & Put Out in Your Home for the Fall Season
Tie multiple pie slices to a string and hang them on the wall, place them on your fridge, or hang them on the wall for the fall season. You’ll remember how fun the process was creating your slices of pie and so will your little one. Keep this project in your back pocked the next time you need a fun fall craft idea!
